There are many different paddle styles, so it’s essential that you find the right paddle to suit your chosen pursuit.
1. Boat width – the wider the boat the longer the paddle.
2. Paddling style:
High-angle Paddling = power – white water, fitness and competition. White water: 194cm to 200 cm. Competition: 212 cm – 220 cm.
Low-angle Paddling = cruising – recreation, relaxation and touring. Sit-ons: 214 cm to 220 cm, Sea Kayaks 220 cm to 230 cm Extra wide kayaks up to 240 cm.
For longer distance paddling over flat water a smaller blade size is preferable as it reduces fatigue. On the other hand, white water or surfing requires a larger blade size. Sea kayak paddles are typically asymmetrical to provide easy entry and exit, reducing torque during stroke.
